When you buy a one cup coffee maker there is always a trade-off.
Before we look at the price of the coffee pods themselves, let’s look at the price of a few coffee pod brewers.
Looking through Amazon.com, where the pricing is always competitive, here’s what you’ll pay for pod brewers (April, 2007):
- Senseo SL7810/65 - $59.47
- Melitta MES2B One:One - $59.95
- Senseo HD 7832/55 - $116.61
- Bunn MCP My Café - $229.95
As you can see, the prices vary considerably. And the higher the price you pay for the brewer, the higher the real cost of the cups of coffee you’ll be brewing.
Now let’s look at the price of coffee pods (averaging out the prices from a variety of different suppliers).
- For a cup of coffee (4-5 ounces) – approx. $0.20
- For a mug of coffee (8 ounces) – approx. $0.40
These prices are very reasonable when compared to the cost of buying a cup of gourmet coffee in a coffee shop. And the cost is not significantly higher than what you’ll pay by making a carafe of coffee with your drip brewer.
In fact, when you consider the amount of coffee that is often left behind in a carafe and then poured down the sink, you may find you’re ultimately paying less for coffee when you use a single serve pod brewer.
It is the low cost per cup that gives pod brewers an advantage over other single-serve systems, and which makes them so popular.
